Text Appearing Before Image:
rand old forest trees, chieflyoaks, whose mossy trunks were reflected in poolsof water which filled every hollow of the bareground. Several drives were made, but nothingcome forward except a few hares. The forestwas too wet, and it was decided to move on tolarge plantations of young oaks, full of dead grass, which afforded excellent cover. The very firstdrive showed that we might well have spent thewhole of our short day there. Covey after coveyof partridges came over, and hares broke out inall directions; but, alas! it was soon time to go.We had a long journey before us, and a mealwas first to be discussed. This was served in asmall farmhouse, admirably clean and tidy, as thehomes of the true Magyars invariably are, themain feature being an excellent paprikas, or stewof fowls with a gravy made red with paprika. Hotas it was, the dogs outside devoured the bonesgreedily, causing one of the company to remark: It was a mild one to-day. Not long ago we had RUMANIAN COTTAGES IN TRANSYLVANIA
Text Appearing After Image:
ESZTERGOM (GRAN), BUDAPEST, AND BAGS 277 a papi^ikas so strong that when the remains wereoffered to the dogs they barked at them! Towards evening we started for the old townof Bacs, once a place of considerable importance, with 15,000 inhabitants, but now containing onlyone-third of that number. Our way led throughthe forest, the road being so soft as to be im-possible for traffic. Bottomless the mud wassaid to be, and the horses wallowed through it,sinking at times almost to the belly. Their desperate efforts on such occasions oftenoverstrain them, and I was told that no ordinarytraveller could have hired them from the farmers, for love or money, after so much rain. We drove on in the twilight, one carriagebehind the other, through the great trees andshallow pools till, about nightfall, we reachedthe borders of a plain across which we were tomake a bee-line for the town. All went welluntil we came to a broad ditch, half full of water, only dimly to be seen. The leading carriage wentdown
