Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Hugh McLean House, 36 Lincoln Parkway, Buffalo, New York, March 2020. Designed by Frank Henry Chapelle, the house includes a number of features that exemplify the Colonial Revival style: a portico crowned by a modillion-bracketed cornice and supported by a pair of columns in the front and pilasters in the back, both of the Tuscan order, with balustrades of Classical inspiration in between; a front entrance framed by engaged Tuscan columns and crowned by a wide fanlight with elegant traceries in a cobweb pattern; dormer windows topped with denticulated Classical pediments. A native of Quebec, Hugh McLean (1861-1927) settled in Buffalo shortly after marrying his wife Minnie in 1890 and founded the Hugh McLean Lumber Company, a wholesale dealer in hardwood lumber. Subsequent owners included William Hume Oliver (1912-1990), manager of the local plant of the American Radiator and Standard Sanitary Corporation, and the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York, who used it as the residence of the local bishop. It's now once again privately owned.
