[edit]DescriptionHughLupus FromDugdale Monasticon.jpg |
English: Imaginary view of "Hugh Lupus Earle of Chester sitting in his parliament with the barons and abbots of that Countie Palatine". 1656 engraving by Wenceslaus Hollar, illustration to King's 'The Vale-Royall of England' and 'A Short Treatise of the Isle of Man' (London: 1656); second state. (British Library/British Museum, ID: 1850,0223.243[1]). This version published in 1718 edition of William Dugdale's Monasticon Anglicanum, between pages 30-31. He lived in the pre-heraldic era so all the coats of arms are "attributed", including his own shown above his throne and on the tabard of his attendant (possibly his chamberlain, identifiable by his staff of office) A wolf's head and neck erased, referring to his Latin epithet "Lupus" (wolf). The engraving is dedicated PM praenobilis Richardi Grossvenour de Eaton in Comitatu Cestriae Equitis Auratis et Baronetti ex stirpe comitatum Cestriae ut abunde patet in archivi A* Regis Ric(ardi) 2 ("(In honour of (?)) the most noble Richard Grosvenor of Eaton in the County of Chester, Knight Bachelor and Baronet, from the stock of the Earls of Chester as is abundantly apparent in the archives "A*" of King Richard II") (w:Sir Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Baronet (c.1604-1665) of Eaton Hall, whose arms are shown at right bottom, featuring the Garb of Chester and a canton of a baronet, ancestor of the Duke of Westminster.) |
