Hove Lagoon

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Hove Lagoon The area was once the old course of the River Adur whose mouth was near Hove until the late 18th century when a new cut was made near Kingston Buci. The remnant of the river up to Aldrington Basin was dredged and canalized in the 1850s cutting off this area leaving marshy ground until it was drained in the 1920s. In 1930 the area opened as a park with two boating lakes and the layout has pretty much remained the same over the following 80 years. During World War Two the boating lake was used to test tanks and other vehicles were waterproofed sufficiently by getting them to drive through it. The days of "Come in number 5 your time is up" may now be over but the lagoon is still used for watersports and is a popular and safe place for children to learn to windsurf and sail. The water itself is pumped in from the sea and was being blown around in a day of high winds.
