Summary
[edit]DescriptionHove Lagoon - geograph.org.uk - 1121080.jpg |
English: Hove Lagoon The smaller lake and about a third of the larger lake are in this square. The area was once marshy ground a remnant of the old course of the River Adur whose mouth was near Hove until the late 18th century and wasn't drained until the 1920s. In 1930 the area opened as a park with two boating lakes and the layout has pretty much remained the same over the following 80 years. During World War Two the boating lake was used to test tanks and other vehicles were waterproofed sufficiently by getting them to drive through it. The days of "Come in number 5 your time is up" may now be over but the lagoon is still used for watersports and is a popular and safe place for children to learn to windsurf and sail. Water is normally pumped in from the sea but the levels are quite low at the moment as they have been recent leaks. The view from the eastern side gives a good indication of how low they are at the moment. |
