| Description |
English: Houses at Gatehead, Stainland An apparently suburban development in the countryside, next to Gatehead Mill but nothing like mill-worker's houses. On the OS map of c.1940. The narrow part behind the flat arched entrance is actually a different house from the wider part with the conservatory, and the widths are reversed at the back so that there is a staggered party wall. This arrangement was used in the 19C for some quite large houses, and also in terrace houses that were almost back-to-back but 'through by light', but it is unusual in 20C houses. |
