Title
English: Houseboat, Seattle, 1905
Description
English:

Houseboats have been popular in various parts of Seattle for many years. Plain and fancy summer houseboats showed up on Lake Washington soon after the opening of the Yesler cable car line in 1888. Both upper class and working class people lived in houseboats on Lake Union. There were speakeasy houseboats during Prohibition and working class houseboat dwellings on the Duwamish during the Depression.

Note from MOHAI records: S.L. Reichenbach's home (pub. in Seattle Times, 6 Aug. 1905). Handwritten on sleeve: Houseboat Int & Ext 1905. Caption by MOHAI staff.
