| Description |
English: As seen in August 2021. The two-story wood-frame house at 81 Mills Street in Buffalo, New York serves as a fine example of the housing that was rapidly being erected in Buffalo's working-class quarters during the era of its construction (it was built in 1898). It's a fairly standard "worker's cottage" design that lacks stylistic distinction, but its rear, sadly not visible from this angle, showcases the "telescoping" phenomenon common to homes in the Polish enclave of Buffalo's East Side: progressively smaller and narrower additions built to accommodate the growth of Buffalo Poles' notoriously large families and/or to facilitate dividing the houses into multiple units to maximize revenue for the landlord. The enclosed sunroom in front is a later addition. Like most such homes, 81 Mills served as home to a revolving door of immigrant industrial laborers, few of whom lived in one place for very long. |
