The subject of bits has received spasmodic attention in the past,but has been much misunderstood, and as a consequence the gov-ernment arsenals have been periodically filled with tons of dis- * The double reined bridle with bit and bridoon was abandoned in theAmerican Cavalry during the Civil War. Many efforts have been madeto reintroduce double reins for use with a curb bit with two rings addedat the ends of the mouth piece. After forty-five years of trial and experi-mentation of many bits the Cavalry Board has recommended a return tothe bit and bridoon and the adoption of new models of both curb andsnaffle (Figures 45 and 47) which possess so many admirable qualities asto commend themselves to both military and civil riders. lOO HORSES, SADDLES AND BRIDELS
