Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sandstone is the # 2 most common sedimentary rock in the world. It is composed of sand-sized grains, which are between 2 millimeters and 1/16 of a millimeter in size. Most sandstones are dominated by quartz grains, but feldspar sand grains and lithic sand grains (= sand-sized rock fragments) are also often present.

In this cross-section view, horizontal stratification is evident. Layers thicker than 1 centimeter are called "beds", while layers thinner than 1 centimeter are called "laminations". Horizontal stratification by itself usually doesn't convey much information about the original environment, apart from a lack of burrowing organisms when the sediments were deposited.
