Description

I am visiting San Francisco for the Pride weekend - one that turned out to be the most historic of them all, thanks to the Supreme Court rulings that legal same-sex marriages cannot be denied federal benefits, and that Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriages in California in late 2008, is dead on a legal technicality.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi is riding through the parade as a key elected official and ally. Her district includes most of San Francisco, and she is the Democratic Leader in the House of Representatives; between 2006 and 2010, when the Democrats had the House majority, she was the Speaker of the House, the first woman to hold the position in US history.

San Francisco is as staunchly Democratic as any place gets politically, thanks to the general liberal bent of the city, the large LGBT bloc, and the blatant homophobia of the Republican Party. While the Republicans do draw some influence primarily from the city's financial industry, the Democratic Party dominates at all levels of the government, and any serious challenges to the Democrats are more likely to come from the Green Party, the only far-left political party that is qualified with ballot status in California.
