which it flows, though we couldnot see the river itself. On our left, the plain wasbroad, terminating in the abrupt, light-gray hills ofJudea, overlooking the site of ancient Jericho. It wasnot till we came almost to the brink of the Jor-dan, that we got a glimpse of its swiftly-flowing andslightly turbid waters. O favored eyes! O hallowedmoment! Can the emotions awakened by such asight be described? And this is the Jordan—thesacred river, flowing as of old—in whose stream andon whose banks such scenes of wonderful interesthave transpired ! And here it rolls still, graceful inits sweep, musical in its flow, and every murmur ofits waters seems to repeat and confirm the events ofBible history. O sweet and quiet spot for sacredmeditation ! Here let me sit down by this tree on thebank, and watch the rushing stream, and recall thepast! PISGAH AND NEBO. 287 a bend in the river to the right, and a considerablegrowth of trees and shrubbery on the banks not farbelow, as well as above, prevented a view of the riverto any great extent. The width of the Jordan here, Ijudged to be twenty yards or more, and its depth wasprobably ten feet. The banks were somewhat precip-itous, and increasingly so at a little distance either,way ; but the waters edge could be easily approachedfor a number of rods at our stopping-place. This isthe traditional place of our Saviours baptism, thepassage of the Israelites, and the farther miraculousdividing of the river by Elijah and Elisha. Here, ornear this spot, all these wonderful events must havetranspired. This is confirmed by Scripture allusionsto localities in the vicinity. Just beyond the plain, on the eastern bank, arethe dark mountain ranges of Moab and Amnion.
