| Description | Holoholokū Heiau in the Wailua Complex of Heiaus (c. 1150), a national landmark district. It was probably known to the natives as Ka Lae o Ka Manu, "the crest of the bird". A horizontal ledge in the southwest is called the Pokhaku Pilo, "sacrificial stone", thus it is probably a luakini temple. It was probably connected in some way to royal birth, perhaps as the place where the drum of Kukaniloko--sounded upon birth--was kept. This heiau has a unique opening which may have been a gate for offerings or a secret entrance. It may have also been a place of refuge. |
