Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Holfertite (Size: 4.9 x 3.8 x 2.6 cm)
Locality: Holfertite pit, Starvation Canyon (Searles Canyon), Thomas Range, Juab Co., Utah, USA
Holferite is a rare hydrated calcium uranium titanium hydroxide that was approved as a species in 2003. It was named for John W. Holfert, the claim holder at Starvation Canyon. As of this time, the species is only found in one place in the world. This piece features a thin, prismatic, yellow-orange crystal of holfertite on typical rhyolite matrix. Most recently the piece was in the collection of Paolo Matioli, but it passed through the hands of Tom Loomis of Dakota Matrix, and originally and most interestingly it was in the collection of Forrest and Barbara Cureton, and their label predates the actual naming of the species, and they had it written as an "Un-named U-Ti-Ca-HREE hydrated oxide" from Starvation Canyon. A small sticker on the back of the Cureton's label confirms that it was named holfertite
