| Description | During the recent trip to Kochi, we were surprised to see several fishermen folk families in coracles in the backwaters of Kochi. Coracles are unfamiliar sights in Kerala and till about 5 years ago never seen there. of late, these people from Karnatka, mostly Hogenakkal and Hampi area come to Kerala in hoards during Monsoons for fishing in the backwaters of Kerala. Unlike the easy-going Malayalees, these hardy folks work overtime, the entire family, wife and kids joining in, and earn more money than an average local fisherman. It is a common sight to see the men casting nets or fishing line while the wife rows the coracle and breastfeed an infant and also take care of the young elder child, all the same time. Talk about multi tasking! |
