was that periscope?another man asked him. About 2,000 yards was the reply. Did the shotscome close to hitting it? Only missed it by six inches, was the observersreply. We had always considered Major Baldwin of the First Battalion a sharkon sensing shots but even the Majors ability was put in the shade by thisnewly-found expert. A wonderful feeling of security came over every man on the ship whentwo days out from Liverpool, when, on arising, we beheld nine Americandestroyers, with the Stars and Stripes streaming from their sterns, plowingalong beside us to escort us through the danger zone. Uncle Sam waswatching out for us, and it was with a most grateful feeling that we watchedthese little sea wasps dart around us. The morning of June 28th found us in the River Mersey, a wide, muddyand traffic-choked stream that led to our destination, which was Birkenhead, just across the river from Liverpool. We docked at about noon, and the firstlong leg of our journey to Germany became a memory. 18
