It stands amid thefrailer structures stanch as the Constitution, while its old-time,learned inhabitant has long since obeyed the summons of theSupreme Court of last resort, where there is no more conflictof laws. Ash Street is the name now given to the old highway lead-ing to the rivers side, where formerly existed an eminenceknown as Windmill Hill, later the site of Brattles bathing-house, from which the way was known as Bath Lane. Themill is mentioned as standing in 1719, and, in all probability,occupied the same ground as the earlier mill of the first plant-ers, removed in 1632 to Boston, because it would not grindbut with a westerly wind. The firm ground extends herequite to the river, so that boats freighted with corn couldunload at the mill.
