Description

Dunvegan is the furthest attraction from Calgary on the Historic Alberta Annual Pass, even further than the Oil Sands Discovery Centre. It is about an hour North of Grande Prairie on the North banks of the Peace River. Adjacent to it, is the beautiful Dunvegan Bridge, the longest suspension bridge in Alberta.

Dunvegan was the site of a trading post and St. Charles mission founded by oblate missionary Christophe Tissier. Like other trading posts, there was likely a post from Hudson's Bay Company, North West Company and others smaller companies such as Revillon Freres (a fur company out of France) where there's a restored building of. The restored buildings can only be entered through a guided tour and is well worthwhile.

After visiting the Father Lacombe Chapel, I do believe that Christophe Tissier is buried in the cemetery out back there as it is a place where oblates are buried and there is a Tissier marked tombstone there. Very neat connection. Twelve Foot Davis is a very interesting figure that is mentioned and his grave is over in Peace River and there are signs leading to it.
