Sort of guessing on the model destination here a bit, but this looks like one of Hino's conventional "Class 6" platforms. Hino is one of several Japanese companies (the others being Isuzu, Mitsubishi Fuso and Nissan Diesel (UD)) who serve as dominant forces in the American medium and light truck markets. Hino is the only one of these companies that doesn't rely exclusively on cabover designs in the States. In the USA, only Hino's lightest offering (the 195, a vehicle I believe to be a relation of the Toyota Dyna called the "Dutro" elsewhere) is a cabover. Mitsubishi and UD offer heavier cabovers to American customers, but Hino decided instead to create conventionals specifically for the North American market. This annoyed me for a couple of reasons: 1. I love cabovers 2. Hino makes some very handsome cabovers overseas that it could probably have imported 3. This conventional design that Hino did ultimately settle on is particularly unattractive, especially relative to the cabover designs Hino builds in great numbers and sells to everyone else. Unfortunately, I can't see Hino changing course any time soon so I suppose we're stuck with this ugly duckling for now. This one is in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, |
