Description Raleigh is a rapidly growing city. 100 years ago, the population was at about 30,000. 50 years ago, 200,000. Today, the city and its suburbs have a population of over 1,000,000, and it is noted as one of the fastest growing cities in the country. This growth is evident in the city's built environment, as downtown is home to many construction sites, and the fringes of the city's suburbs continue to sprawl further and further out towards the edges of Wake County. It is truly a fascinating time to witness the city, as it is at a critical juncture in its history right now that will have a great effect on the future of millions of people.
