Summary
[edit]DescriptionHighbury & Islington electric crossing.jpg |
English: At Highbury & Islington station the third rail section of the East London line ends. The feed cables for (direct) current crosses the track fed with alternating current (Yellow crossings). This to prevent any signaling interference. Alternating and direct current don't mix easily. To the left the third rail equipped track terminates with a buffer. There is a connecting track between the North London line and the East London line. There however a forty meter section of track without overhead or third rail. The overhead line terminates at the bridge but is isolated at first overhead mast seen in the picture. (The white stuff around the wire) Only non-electric worktrains can pass th rough. There is limited opportunity to allow the dual voltage trains to pass between the NLL & ELL, particularly when stock ends up in the wrong place. The 40m gap between the overhead supply and the third rail is slightly less than the distance between the first (or last) pick up shoe and the pantograph on the 4 carriage sets. A train will be able to be moved to the isolated overhead wire which will then be made temporarily live to allow the stock to be moved. The reverse action will allow the trains to pass between NLL & ELL |
