Description

Eigen tekenwerk. Dit wapen werd geacht dat van Karel de Grote te zijn geweest. Dat is niet zo. Karel leefde in een tijd dat er nog geen heraldiek bestond. Latere generaties dichten hem dit wapen toe zoals zij iedere historische of mythische figuur een wapenschild gaven.

Een dergelijk wapen, eerst met een adelaar met één kop, later twee koppen werd door het Heilige Roomse Rijk gebruikt. Het is ook het wapen van het Domkappitel van Aken.
