Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Heron Wood Cryptogamic Sanctuary, Dawyck Botanic Garden Heron Wood is part of the Dawyck Botanic Garden, which is an outstation of the Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh. Many trees in the garden were badly damaged by the big storm of January 1968, and Heron Wood was the last part due to receive remedial treatment. In the meantime funding changes meant staff cuts, and Heron Wood was left to recover without interference. In 1993 it was agreed that it should remain unmanaged, and become the first reserve or ‘sanctuary’ in the world devoted specifically to the study of cryptogams – flowerless plants [ferns, mosses, liverworts and algae], fungi and lichens – and their interactions with other organisms in the soil and litter of woodland.
