English: Arms of:
Fleuron from book:
Earl Beaulieu (pronounced "Bewley"), of Beaulieu in the County of Southampton, was a title in the Peerage of Great Britain. It was created in 1784 for the 1st Baron Beaulieu, who had earlier represented Tiverton in the House of Commons. He had previously been created Baron Beaulieu, of Beaulieu in the County of Southampton, in 1762, also in the Peerage of Great Britain. Born Edward Hussey, he was the husband of Lady Isabella Montagu, widow of the 2nd Duke of Manchester and daughter of the 2nd Duke of Montagu, and had assumed by Royal Licence the additional surname of Montagu in 1749. In 1786 John Murray, 4th Duke of Atholl (1755–1830) was created Baron Murray, of Stanley in the County of Gloucester, and Earl Strange in the Peerage of Great Britain. These are the arms of Murray, not of Strange. The arms of Strange of Knokyn appear in the 3rd quarter, quartered by Stanley. James Stanley, 10th Earl of Derby, 6th Baron Strange (1664–1736) was childless and was succeeded in the barony by his first cousin once removed James Murray, 2nd Duke of Atholl, who became the 7th Baron Strange as well. He was the grandson of Lady Amelia Anne Sophia Stanley, daughter of James Stanley, 7th Earl of Derby. On his death the dukedom and barony separated. He was succeeded in the dukedom by his nephew John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl, while the barony passed to his daughter Charlotte, the eighth Baroness. She married her first cousin, the third Duke of Atholl. They were both succeeded by their son, the fourth Duke and ninth Baron. In 1786 he was created Earl Strange and Baron Murray of Stanley in the Peerage of Great Britain. |
