Contributors: F C Dickinson (active 1900–1901); J Duncan (active 1900).
English: The queen and her wounded soldiers [?] royal party in one of the lower wards of Netley Hospital. Over six hundred men who have taken part in the South African campaign were seen by the Queen when she paid her visit to Netley on Wednesday. It was Her Majesty's fourth visit to the hospital during the past twelve months, and, as before, she took several large baskets of flowers with her from Windsor as gifts for the patients. Thirteen Colonials are among the [patients?] present in hospital, and the Queen, who had asked that they might be pointed out to her as she went along, thanked them for their voluntary services. There were kindly words and a spray of flowers for every bed-ridden soldier, and so closely did Her Majesty observe every little detail that she handled one of the service pillows, and said that they were not soft enough for men who had to endure such pain – with the result that the patients may expect more comfortable pillows at no distant date. Altogether the Queen spent an hour and a half in the wards.
