Description |
English: Henry Clay in the Old U.S. Senate Chamber.
Artist Phineas Staunton from Le Roy, New York created this painting in 1866 for a competition sponsored by the state of Kentucky to create a portrait of Clay to hang in the state Senate chamber. Staunton lost in a close vote, and the painting was returned to Le Roy, where it languished in obscurity for many years, becoming badly damaged. In 2006, the painting came to the attention of the U.S. Senate Commission on Art; the painting was of great interest because it is only one of three known paintings to depict the Old Senate Chamber. A lengthy restoration process began. In 2009, fully restored, the painting was hung in the Brumidi Stairwell in the U.S. Capitol.
