Summary

[edit]
Description Henry C. Lytton House in the Hazel Avenue/Prospect Avenue Historic District in Highland Park, IL (c. 1915). The original house was built in 1880. In 1915, a massive addition was constructed on the property, and the original house became the maids' quarters. Lytton was chairman of Henry C. Lytton & Sons Department Store. Nicknamed "The Hub", the store sold apparel and sporting goods. Lytton retired in 1917 to allow his son to run the company; following his son's death in 1933, Henry again oversaw the store until he died in 1947 at the age of 101. The firm operated until 1985. He bought the property and built the addition after marrying a southern woman in 1915. It was expanded again in the 1930s with the north shore's first in-ground pool.
