Summary

[edit]
Description

Hemimycena epichloe (Kühner) Singer

Image location: Apache National Forest, Apache Co., Arizona, USA

Caps about 3 mm, found under the same log as the asco in Observation 288963. Growing from grass stems, one of which appeared alive.

Basidia 2-spored, 18+3 x 5. Spores 8-10 × 2.5-3. No reactions in Melzer’s. No hymenial cystidia. Caulocystidia ~40 × 5.

H. ignobilis lacks cystidia but has smaller spore length/width ratio (2 vs. 3 here) and larger, 4-spored basidia. Measurements are OK for H. epichloe, which has been found both 2- and 4-spored. The uncommon habitat (leaves and stems of grasses) is just right for this species. Inflated hymenophoral cells are also mentioned. Under diverticulate pileipellis hyphae, we have a layer of inflated cells like in Mycena, and this is a noticeable difference from the drawing in Antonin & Noordeloos, where these cells are shown as cylindrical. There is a possible issue with the gills: they are typically reduced in H. epichloe and here we see them well developed. Finally, H. epichloe is a European species, I don’t know if there are any records from other parts. All in all, I wouldn’t bet more than 50c that this collection represents a true H. epichloe — it’s just the best name I can attach to it.
