The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a false-color image of the extensive snow cover on December 19.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Eastern China shivered under frigid cold and an unusually widespread blanket of snow in mid-December 2023. Temperatures dropped to near-record lows of -15.5 °C (4.1 °F), while heavy snow fell on parts of Shaanxi, Shanxi, Hebei, Henan, Jilin, Liaoning provinces, and cities like Beijing and Shanghai. On December 15, early in the winter storm, icy conditions caused two subway trains to collide in Beijing. Media reports stated that 515 people were sent to the hospital due to the accident, including 102 with broken bones. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a false-color image of the extensive snow cover on December 19. This type of false-color image combines infrared and visible light (MODIS Bands 7,2, and 1). Here, snow appears bright blue, from cloud is white, vegetated land looks, and water shows up as blue. Green-gray circles visible in the snow are cities and the straight lines connecting the cities are major roadways. Beijing is the largest circle near the northern edge of the snow.
