Summary
[edit]DescriptionHeath Spotted-orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata) - geograph.org.uk - 897167.jpg |
English: Heath Spotted-orchid (Dactylorhiza maculata) This is by far the most abundant orchid in this area. The Heath Spotted-orchids that are found in Britain belong to the subspecies ericetorum.
In June and July, the moor is host to hundreds of these flowers, which vary enormously in the degree of colouring, in the precise shape of the lips of the flowers, and in the wide variety of markings to be seen there. Their colours range from pure white (without markings) to darker forms (such as the one shown in the photo), though pale colours are the most common. The acid moorland of this area provides the ideal habitat for this species. |
