Description |
English: This head, along with its companion piece Head of a Male Saint, was already in this format in the 16th century in the Amerbach collection, but the pair were certainly cut from one or more larger panels of a retable or altarpiece. In 1586, Basilius Amerbach noted these pieces as "H. Holbein's first work", though doubts have occasionally been raised about the attribution.
