AKM, on which he worked more than twenty years, is his first and most known great project. Tabanlıoğlu, coming from a trader family in Ankara, was graduated from İTÜ Architectural Faculty in 1950. Next year he begun his Ph. D. study in Hannover Technical University in Germany. here he worked with Gerhard Graubner, one of the top specialists of his own field, on theater and opera house architecture. The opportunity to have worked and researched with Gerhard Graubner in the post-war period, where lots of modernist opera houses were designed and construcucted in the context of construction of the new Germany, took a great role with his assignement to the unfinished opera house construction in 1956. With his expertness on planing, programming of opera houses and theaters and on technical equipments, Tabanlıoğlu got a clear design vision and realized them with co-workers from Turkey and Germany. The late period modernist designs of Tabanlıoğlu are a result of the attention he showed, at programatic issues like circulations and the use of spaces programmed with modular and mesurable construction systems.
