Description |
English: Washington State's shingle industry grew fast during the 1890s. In 1892, the number of shingle mills doubled to 246. Shingles were moved by wagon from the mills to the railroads. In 1892 alone, over 900 million shingles were shipped by rail from Washington State. This 1900 photo shows a wagonload of shingles made by the Wood & Iverson shingle mill near Monroe. The horse team is hauling it along a plank road to the railroad siding. Full title: Hauling shingles on cross plank road to the RR siding, near Monroe.
