Description
English: Item is one of 123 pen-and-ink drawings and watercolours from two volumes titled : "Sketches of the War : France/Belgium. The sketches vary from satirical cartoons to more detailed and naturalistic renditions. They are often accompanied by an ironic title and are often signed with the artist's initials, "J.M." The artist's satirical targets include the officers and high command of both combatant sides; the disjuncture between reported and actual events, and the death of civilians as a fact of modern warfare.
Français : Il s'agit de l'un des 123 dessins à la plume et aquarelles réunis dans deux volumes et intitulés : "Sketches of the War : France/Belgium" ("Croquis de la guerre : France/Belgique"). Les esquisses diffèrent des caricatures satiriques par des rendus plus détaillés et naturalistes. Elles sont souvent accompagnées d'un titre ironique et sont généralement signées des initiales de l'artiste, "J.M.". Les cibles satiriques de l'artiste visent les officiers et le haut commandement des deux camps combattants  ; le décalage entre les évènements rapportés et réels ; la mort de la civilisation en tant que réalité de la guerre moderne.
