Notes | 13- 5 Leonard John Armstrong, Auckland Mounted Rifles (WW1), Territorials, National Military Reserve (WW2) Born in 1888, Leonard John Armstrong enlisted as a trooper in the Auckland Mounted Rifles soon after war broke out in 1914. He embarked on the Tofua on 16 October 1914 and trained in Egypt before going on to Gallipoli with his unit. Armstrong was wounded on 29 May 1915, soon after his arrival on Gallipoli, but went on to receive honours for his work around this time, being recommended for continuous food work with his machine gun between April and August 1915, and was subsequently awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal. Armstrong went on to serve on the Western Front and was promoted as Second Lieutenant in May 1917 and as Lieutenant in November 1918. He was discharged in 19819, returning to Auckland and was absorbed into the Reserve of Officers (Territorials). He re-enlisted for WW2 and served with the National Military Reserve. | |||||||||||||||||||||||
