Photograph of the former jailhouse in Tweed, Ontario, being used as a tourist information centre. North America's smallest jailhouse, size 16 ft by 20 ft. It originally contained 3 cells, each approx. 6 ft by 7 ft. the original steel bars were replaced when the building was converted into a tourist information booth and office by the Tweed Chamber of Commerce. On April 6, 1899, the Township of Hungerford sold to the Village of Tweed for the sum of $1.00, of lawful money of Canada, part of Lot 48, East side of Victoria Street, the same being a plot of land 22 ft by 45 ft. A by-law was passed by the Township of Hungerford granting said land to the Corporation of the Village of Tweed for-ever. Signed: Robert Caskey, Reeve of Hungerford; William White, Reeve of Tweed. The building was completed in 1900. The deed to the property is registered in the Registry Office, County of Hastings, Belleville. There is a photocopy on display in the jailhouse. |
