Description
English: Originally awarded the U.S. Medal of Honor in 1894 for the capture of Confederate Major-General Custis Lee, son of Robert E. Lee, during the Battle of Sailor's Creek,Virginia on April 6, 1865, Harris S. Hawthorn served as a private with the 121st New York Infantry during the American Civil War. The 37th Massachusetts Infantry disputed this award in the year 1897, however, claiming that Private David Dunnels White of their regiment was the actual captor of Major-General Lee.
