Summary
[edit]DescriptionHarriette (38229158886).jpg | Harriette the Frog is perhaps the most whimsical animal on the Carousel – while without question she is certianly the most “ribbit-ing”. Every detail on Harriette is symbolic of some aspect of Anna H. Murphy’s life, even down to a frog being chosen to represent her. After all, Anna had a porcelain frog collection numbering almost 200 thus making the animal choice for Anna a natural selection. Harriette is wearing a straw hat – something Anna always wore while gardening. In addition, Harriette has 12 tadpoles on her apron (six on each side) which represent each of her 12 pregnancies (she has seven surviving children). Anna grew up during the great depression and as many people did, made her own clothes, this included her bloomers she would make out of either flower or sugar sacks. On her “romance” side (the side that faces out as the carousel turns) you will find she is carryng a canning jar for to preserve food for later use. One might notice flies in the canning jar instead of peas or preserves, which do you think a frog would favor? Keep in mind that Anna loved to catch fireflies as a child, here you will also find a yellow rose, which was her favorite flower. Also on her non-romance side (the side that faces inward as the carousel turns) one will find a pocket with a loon on it, the State bird of Minnesota where Anna grew up. In the pocket is black whip licorice, her favorite candy, as well as a monogramed hankie because Anna was a true lady and always carried a hankie with her. There is also a safety pin on the hem of her apron because Anna, despite time or place, could always produce a safety pin. Harriette is adopted in loving memory by the family of Anna Harriette Murphy. |
