Description
English: A Harrier aircraft waits in a hangar at Kandahar, Afghanistan prior to departure.

1(F) Squadron marked the end of Harrier air operations in Afghanistan in June 2009, five years after RAF and Royal Navy pilots first engaged the Taliban in Operation HERRICK.

97 year old 1 Sqn, the oldest fighter squadron in the RAF, returned home on 1 July 2009, to be replaced by 12 Sqn’s Tornado GR4s, based at RAF Lossiemouth. Harriers have been supporting British and NATO coalition personnel since 2004 by providing vital air cover, ground close air support and strikes against insurgents in the field.
