Harness stud: Canteloupe/Cantello arms |
||
Description |
English: A copper alloy harness stud with a shield-shaped head; there is a pointed projection at the rear with the last third bent over. The end is very rough and obviously broken off. The shield has substantial traces of fractured red enamel outlining three splayed fleurs-de-lys, two at the top and one on the bottom There are also small traces of blue enamel on the lower portion of a central horizontal band. The original arms appear to have been gules, a fess vair between three fleurs-de-lys or. Measurements: 16 mm x 21 mm; projection 10 mm from back to bend point.
These are the arms of William de Cantelupe, Lord of Ravensthorp, signatory of the Barons' letter of 1301. Occasionally, they are encountered with three leopard's heads jessant de lys instead of the fleurs-de-lys; his seal on the Barons' letter uses fleurs-de-lys. The de Cantelupes are mostly found in the general Hereford and Worcester area in the 12th and 13th centuries, and must have been involved in the Welsh conflicts of the period. They include amongst their numbers a High Steward and two prominent churchmen: Walter de Cantilupe, Bishop of Worcester and St Thomas de Cantilupe, Bishop of Hereford, 1218 1282. The family was well-connected amongst the nobility, marrying de Braci, de Mohun and de Broase wives; William's cousin, also William, Baron of Abergavenny (c. 1216-1255), married Eva de Braose, granddaughter of William Marshal. William de Cantilupe is recorded at the battle of Falkirk and the siege of Caerlaverock; he served in Edward I's Scottish campaigns in the period 1299-1308, attending at least one muster in York, and was summoned to Edward II's coronation in 1308. He died 1309 and was succeeded by his son, Nicholas, who is recorded in Edward III's service. |
