Title |
Harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant and hanger, apparently still articulated. The hanger is cross-shaped, with three short arms of diamond-section. Each arm is pierced for a rivet near the end; each arm terminates in a small rounded knop. Two of the three rivets survive in situ, at least as heads. The hinge is compact. The pendant is in good condition, with a fairly smooth surface which appears to be a dark grey colour. The surface if the hanger is slightly rough, but this may be the original finish. The pendant has a clear design cast into the face, or a lion rampant facing left. Virtually all of the red enamel background survives, albeit decayed. I. Szymanski has identified this as probably being the arms of the Earls of Arundel, who had a golden lion. This artefact dates to the 13th or 14th century. (Recorded from a photograph) |
