Summary
[edit]DescriptionHard Fern (Blechnum spicant) - geograph.org.uk - 1740449.jpg |
English: Hard Fern (Blechnum spicant). The Hard Fern (Blechnum spicant) is also known as a Deer Fern and is a very common fern, this particular specimen was pictured growing near the River Goyt (1375274), but it can be found just about anywhere in the valley. It is a once-pinnately divided fern with the pinnae growing along the frond in a "herring-bone" fashion.
Hard Ferns also have two different types of fronds depending on whether they are fertile or not, the sterile (or vegetative) fronds have broader pinnae that grow outwards and flat to the ground forming a sort of rosette, they are also a much lusher green. The fertile fronds are very similar in structure to the infertile fronds but they grow up from the centre of the rosette and are much stiffer with very narrow (and more numerous) pinnae, this makes them look very gaunt. As with all ferns they reproduce by spores that are contained in a sorus (plural sori) that looks like a blob attached to the underside of the pinna, the sori on Hard Ferns are linear in shape and run in a continuous line along the mid-rib of the pinna.
