Notes |
English: The painting is damaged by four large cracks and much repainting, but, according to art historian John Rowlands, Holbein's fine work is evident in the features, beard, shirt, and hands.
Hans (or John) of Antwerp was a goldsmith and friend of Holbein, who was at his deathbed and carried out the terms of his will.[1] He has been identified as the possible sitter from the damaged inscription, which also mentions the Hanseatic merchants' Steelyard, where he may have worked as a goldsmith or a merchant or both.[2][3][4] The scholarship on the sitter's identity is not, however, conclusive. The same man is depicted in a roundel after Holbein.
