Description
English: Drawing, in red chalk on white paper, of a man hanged by one foot. This was a preparatory sketch for a pittura infamante or shame painting. It is located in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence, Italy. Hanging by one foot was a method of execution, prolonged and particularly degrading. In Germany it was usually associated with Jews and called the "Jewish Execution", while in Italy it was usually associated with traitors. Shame paintings, depicting such hanging in effigy, were common in some parts of Italy, including Florence. Andrea del Sarto drew seven such images which have survived. One of the Tarot trump cards shows such a hanged man, which was called il traditore (The Traitor) in most early sources.
