Description
Nederlands: Pagina uit het Handschrift De Doppere. "In Alkaire zagen wij menighe vreymde beeste, sonderlinghe een toebehoorende den Souldaen gheheeten geraf, zeere hooghe van stature, grooter dan .j. kemel, met eenen langhen halze, thooft hebbende ghelijc eenen hert, met .ij. hooren, rood van coluere, gestrijpt losanghewijs van witte, de achter beenen ofte voeten zeere nederst hebbende, gherijnghelt an de nuese met eenen grooten gouden rijnghe, daer men se mede bedwanc ghelijk een paert, met zijnen breydele, goedertiere ghenouch in haer schijnen."
English: Page from Handschrift De Doppere, a Belgian manuscript describing a journey via Genua and Cairo to Jerusalem, in 1470-1471. "In Cairo we saw many strange animals, in particular one belonging to the Sultan, named a giraffe, very high of stature, larger than a camel, with a long neck, hoofed in the way of a deer, horned, red in colour, striped over the body in white, the hind legs much lower, ringed in the nose with a large golden ring to subdue it like a horse with his bridle, though very trusting in nature."
