Notes |
Vita Cochran, a New Zealand textile artist now living in Sydney, is almost unique in her field. Cochran uses the conventions and materials of hobbycrafts, but through her refined eye for colour and form coupled with meticulous workmanship, her work is elevated to something worthy of a gallery setting. Previous works have used thrifted female fashion detritus- buttons, zips and gloves, the latter featuring in Hand Work Bag, 2007. This series continues the theme of the comfortable and familiar, here evoked through the common flowers found in New Zealand gardens. In her artist’s statement, Cochran says that these bags “…portray the flowers we see every day, the flowers by the footpath not in the florist’s shop. They are also flowers we know through shared associations – of finding forget-me-knots, making daisy chains, tasting peppery-sweet nasturtiums, popping fuchsia pods, or telling time by blowing on the seed head of a dandelion. I don’t want to transform or especially elevate these flowers. I just want them to be there, held in common”. The Nasturtium Bag, with its colourful sculptural blooms, has both immediate visual appeal and the reminder of simple pleasures as mentioned by Cochran. As an object that is carefully made and of good quality, it also reflects Cochran’s inclination against throwaway fashion – a philosophy shared by many contemporary craft practitioners. |
