Description
Deutsch: Chileflamingos sind die häufigsten der drei südamerikanischen Flamingoarten. Absammeln von Eiern für den menschlichen Verzehr und Lebensraumzerstörung durch Bewässerungsprojekte und Bergbau haben ihren großen Bestand jedoch in 40 Jahren etwa halbiert. Sie brüten unter oft rauen klimatischen Bedingungen in riesigen Kolonien, vor allem auf den Hochebenen der Anden und in Patagonien. Einige Tage vor der Eiablage errichten die Vögel im Salzwasser baumstumpfähnliche Schlammnester. Auch nach der Eiablage wird eifrig weiter gebaut: Das turmähnliche Nest ergänzen die Flamingos mit Steinen, Federn, Schlamm, Muscheln und anderen Dingen, die sie auf dem Nistplatz stehend erreichen können.
