Summary
[edit]DescriptionHambleton Street - geograph.org.uk - 862556.jpg |
English: Hambleton Street. Looking along the drove road which reached the peak of its importance in the 17th and 18th centuries as the main trail south from Scotland. At the point where the short stub of wall joins the main wall stood the Limekiln House, an important staging point in the long journey south. Here cattle were rested for a day or two. As befits the name the moor was an important source of good quality limestone although the stone was transported down to the kilns in the dales where fuel was readily available. In the 1841 census John Pearson was publican although by this time the drove road was beginning to feel the impact of the growth of the railways. The inn closed in 1897. |
