Het vliegtuig, een Halifax bommenwerper, op weg naar zijn doel, een V1 lanceerinstallatie werd zwaar beschadigd door de Duitse luchtafweer. De piloot, William Gladstone Hoffman, hield het vliegtuig onder controle. Hij vermeed de stad Nieuwpoort en loste zijn bommen boven onbebouwd land. Daarbij vielen twee burgers als slachtoffer. Zes bemanningsleden konden het vliegtuig verlaten. Vijf van hen konden met hun parachute ongedeerd landen. Eén van hen, de radioöperator en schutter Russell Harry Winter stortte te pletter. De piloot stierf bij de crash van het vliegtuig. De vier slachtoffers zijn begraven op het kerkhof van Sint-Joris. Onderaan twee tabletten, achtergelaten door nabestaanden bij een bezoek aan het monument
