English: Halibut fishermen in dory, ca. 1909 |

Description |
English: For many years, halibut crews used small boats called dories when they set and hauled their long fishing lines. Dories were about sixteen feet long, and each held two men. They were powered by oars or by sail. Fishing from dories was so very dangerous, particularly in cold rough weather, that it was banned in 1930.
This photo shows two men in a dory returning to the halibut steamer "Independent" with their lines and fish. A furled sail hangs over the stern of the dory. The photo was taken somewhere in the northern Pacific Ocean between 1902 and 1916.
